About Unification

On September 29, 2016, the Vermont State Colleges Board of Trustees voted unanimously to approve Chancellor Jeb Spaulding’s recommendation that Lyndon State College and Johnson State College unify to become one “larger and stronger” institution, with two distinct campuses, under one administration, with Dr. Elaine Collins as president.

The new institution, which will officially launch as Northern Vermont University on July 1, 2018, will provide new academic and extracurricular opportunities and a reduction in operating costs. Students can look forward to more chances to participate in shared classes and clubs, new academic programs, enhanced advising support and more. At the same time, both campuses will retain their individual character, including their sports teams and mascots.

The process of unification has begun as LSC and JSC faculty, staff, and administrators work behind the scenes to build a bigger, stronger school that can adapt to the changing economic times and serve the students of today and tomorrow.
